The UN chief has called for a seven-day truce in the Gaza Strip to allow polio vaccinations to be carried out safely.

The UN Secretary-General has asked Israel and Hamas to suspend hostilities in Gaza to vaccinate children against polio, after a 10-month-old baby was diagnosed with the disease. The plan is to vaccinate some 640,000 children in Gaza in response to a surge in cases in the region.

Palestinian health officials are preparing for a vaccination campaign, planning to deliver 1.2 million doses of the vaccine to Gaza with the support of UNICEF. The UN has warned that without a temporary ceasefire, the fight against the spread of the virus will be difficult. Hamas welcomed Guterres' offer and is helping with the vaccinations.
