AFP reported that weapons designed to attack ships in the international waters of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden were stored in warehouses.
The Houthis began attacks on ships in the Red Sea in November 2023. They attack ships crossing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to enter the Red Sea and on to the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea. The Houthis say they are attacking ships linked to Israel in an attempt to stop its attacks on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
To protect shipping in the region, the United States launched Operation Prosperity Guardian in December 2023. Participating in it are the UK, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain. On March 2, the cargo ship Rubymar sank due to a Houthi attack, and on March 6, two crew members of the commercial vessel True Confidence were killed in an attack.
In April, the UK destroyer HMS Diamond protected a merchant ship from a missile fired by the Houthis. On May 27, the Houthis attacked the oil tanker Andromeda Star, and in June they attacked the Verbena ship, injuring one sailor and causing a fire on board. The crew left the ship on June 16.
