Donald Trump arrived in Sharm El-Sheikh to lead a summit with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. More than 20 world leaders gathered to discuss ending the conflict in Gaza.
Among the participants are leaders from Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Turkey, as well as representatives from European, Arab, and Islamic countries. Russia was left off the invitation list.
Refusal and Expectations
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declined to participate, citing the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Mahmoud Abbas, head of the Palestinian Authority, is expected at the summit.
Peace Plan and Its Prospects
Leaders are discussing further steps within Trump’s peace plan. Israel and Hamas previously agreed to a ceasefire mediated by the US, Qatar, and Turkey.
The plan provides for the disarmament of Hamas and the creation of a temporary Palestinian government. However, Hamas has already expressed disagreement with these terms.
Hopes and Challenges
Speaking in the Knesset, Trump expressed confidence that the war would not resume. He called it the beginning of a new era of agreement and harmony in the region.
The conflict began two years ago with an attack by Hamas on Israel. Israel’s retaliatory actions drew criticism due to civilian casualties.
The US supports Israel, striving for a swift establishment of peace. Humanitarian aid and stabilization issues remain at the forefront.
The conclusion of the summit could be an important step towards the long-awaited peace, opening new opportunities for the region.
