US President Donald Trump once again emphasized that he is capable of personally influencing negotiations between Ukraine and Russia and “closing the issue of peace faster than anyone.” He speaks about this confidently, as if it were a deal that can be concluded quickly. However, according to military observer Denis Popovich, such a scheme does not work here — too much depends on reasons that cannot be resolved with a single signed document.

Some of Trump’s diplomatic steps in the past have already shown this problem. Popovich recalls the episode with Hamas and Israel: there were agreements, there was a pause, but the conflict returned almost in the same form. This is an important marker. “Signing a paper is easy. Changing what caused the war is a completely different story,” the expert notes.

The root of the war between Ukraine and Russia, according to analysts, remains unchanged: the Kremlin’s course to return Ukraine to a dependent state. What is called “imperial policy” is the reason why any agreements turn out to be temporary. As long as Moscow maintains the goal of subjugating Kyiv, every “peace treaty” becomes a pause, not a solution.

Popovich sees almost no room for illusions in this process. The Kremlin’s aggression is systemic, not situational. Only the form changes — pressure, missiles, ultimatums, statements. The essence is the same. Therefore, the demand “first paper — then peace” looks too optimistic and weakly connected to reality.

Against this backdrop, Trump added another element — the topic of elections in Ukraine. He stated that “voting is necessary because it hasn’t happened for a long time.” This sparked a new wave of discussions, joined by the head of the organization “Ukraine in NATO” Yuriy Romanyuk. He explained that such statements by Trump usually do not sound on their own, but as part of political pressure when Washington tries to build its own negotiation track and demands confirmed legitimacy of the Ukrainian government.

Romanyuk notes that the issue of elections during a war automatically becomes vulnerable. It is simultaneously a tool for external players and a risk for a country conducting defense. Therefore, any such statements require attention to context, especially when it comes to a state that is under daily attack.

As a result, the situation is heterogeneous: Trump’s statements are loud, resonant, but most importantly — they do not answer the question of what to do with the very cause of the war. It remains in place. And until it is eliminated, any scenarios of “quick peace” look like political constructions, not real solutions. That is why these discussions are closely followed by NAnews — News of Israel | Nikk.Agency.
