Türkiye has applied to join BRICS, Bloomberg reports.

The journalists' sources say one of the reasons Turkey applied to join the BRICS bloc of countries, which includes Russia, China, India, South Africa and Brazil, is “frustration” over the lack of progress towards the EU.

The move seeks to build alliances beyond the West. According to Bloomberg, Turkey is set to discuss expansion at a summit in Russia in October.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s position is that the geopolitical centre of gravity is shifting away from the developed economies. Turkey is seeking to bolster its global influence and forge new ties beyond its traditional Western allies. The country’s new diplomatic push reflects its desire to develop ties with all sides of a multipolar world. The interlocutors also noted that Turkey’s bid is also partly the result of disagreements with other NATO members after Ankara maintained close ties with Russia following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry and the Turkish presidential administration declined to comment. In July, Erdogan announced Turkey's possible “entry” into Israel, prompting a reaction from the Israeli Foreign Ministry. American authorities warned Turkey of the risk of sanctions for supplying American equipment to Russia. It is also noted that in 2024, Turkey significantly increased its exports of dual-use goods to Russia or neighboring intermediary countries.
