“On September 22, at 07:44, the US military shot down a Houthi-launched drone in Yemen. The drone was detected over the Red Sea and posed a threat to coalition forces and merchant ships in the region,” US Central Command (USCENTCOM) reported on the social network “X.”
The drone posed a direct threat to American and coalition forces, as well as commercial shipping, so measures were taken to ensure the security of international waters and freedom of navigation. Since the outbreak of conflict between Israel and Hamas, Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen have targeted commercial shipping in the Strait of Aden and the Red Sea.
In response to the Houthis, the US military and the EU coalition have been carrying out strikes on targets in Yemen. In August, two ships belonging to Yemeni militants were destroyed, and in early September, the Houthis attacked Greek oil tankers.
