Israeli writer David Grossman has won the Heinrich Heine Literary Prize, the Dusseldorf municipality announced. This prestigious award was previously given to another Israeli, Amoz Oz. The statement noted that Grossman's work reflects themes that are important to Israeli life.
The Heinrich Heine Prize was established in 1972 in honor of the poet's anniversary. It is awarded every two years, and the amount is 50,000 euros. The decision on the award is made by a special jury, and the presentation usually takes place on Heine's birthday – December 13.
Previous winners of the Heinrich Heine Prize have included such renowned writers and critics as Carl Zuckmayer, Walter Jens, Max Frisch and Rachel Salamander. David Grossman, upon receiving the award, commented that it was “good news in a time of so much bad news.”
