US President Joe Biden's senior adviser Amos Hochstein said on August 14 that he believes it is possible to avoid a full-scale war between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. However, this requires that Israel and Hamas reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza without delay. Hochstein arrived in Beirut today to prevent an escalation between Hezbollah and Israel, Reuters reports.

Hochstein said a diplomatic solution was possible because no one wanted a full-scale war between Lebanon and Israel. After talks with Hezbollah-allied parliament speaker Nabih Berri, he stressed the importance of reaching a ceasefire.

Referring to the ceasefire agreement in Gaza that he had discussed with Berri, Hochstein expressed hope that it would also help resolve the situation in Lebanon and prevent a major war. Asked about the possibility of avoiding a war between Israel and Hezbollah, he replied: “I believe in it.”

The Wall Street Journal previously reported on a debate in Israel over whether to launch an offensive against Hezbollah or de-escalate to avoid triggering a wider conflict. Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and members of Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party favor a military confrontation with Hezbollah.
