Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto called diplomat Josep Borrell's proposals “reckless” and called for maintaining peace and avoiding escalation of conflicts. In his statement, he noted that relations between Hungary and the European Union had become more complicated after Budapest took over the presidency of the EU Council.

“We continue to advocate for common sense and peace,” the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry emphasized. The diplomats discussed controversial issues at a meeting in Brussels with Dmytro Kuleba and Josep Borrell. Having made proposals to allow Ukraine to use Western weapons to attack targets in Russia, they caused disagreements. Kuleba spoke in favor of a freer use of weapons than previously assumed. The figures were provided by diplomats Antoni Guterres and Petre Sterbe.

Hungary responded by refusing to back Borrell's proposals, arguing that weapons must be used wisely to avoid escalating the conflict. The Brussels meeting passed without heated debate, but the sides remained divided. Slovakia, under Robert Fico's government, opposed the proposals, expressing regret that the meeting was not held in Budapest. Peter Szijjarto also rejected the idea of imposing sanctions on Israeli ministers for “unacceptable hate speech” against the Palestinians.

However, Hungary has come under fire from Lithuania and Germany for its “national card” program. The program facilitates immigration for Russians and Belarusians, which has caused discontent in several EU countries. Szijjártó noted that there are significantly more Russians living in other countries than in Hungary. Therefore, the program has some justification. Critics have called his position simplistic and unscientific. Relations between Hungary and the EU have worsened since Budapest took over the presidency of the EU Council. Some foreign ministers have decided to hold their summit in Brussels instead of Hungary due to differences in positions. The main reason for the discussion is the decisions of the EU and Hungary on the Ukrainian conflict.
