Iran is seeking to restart talks on its broken nuclear deal with the West at a meeting of world leaders in New York on September 9, 2024. They have already spoken about resuming talks on the controversial nuclear deal with the European Union's top diplomat Josep Borrell, Iran's Foreign Ministry's Nasser Kanaani said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had a positive phone call with Borrell, and they agreed that the UN summit provides a “good opportunity” to resume talks on the nuclear deal, Bloomberg reports.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to address the United Nations General Assembly in late September, as Iran-backed militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah battle Israel in the Gaza Strip and on Lebanon's southern border.

Talks to revive the controversial 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers, including the US and the EU, broke down more than two years ago during the administration of President Ibrahim Raisi.

The US State Department has said Iran must stop nuclear escalation and cooperate with the IAEA to show it is serious about resuming talks on a nuclear deal. The Biden administration views the prospect of returning to talks with Iran as a politically unfavorable step.
