Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced that it was banning Russian state media company RT and other Kremlin-controlled media outlets from its platforms for engaging in manipulation. “After careful review, we have expanded our current actions against Russian state media. RT and other related entities are now banned from our apps globally for interference,” a Meta spokesperson said. Before the ban, RT had 7.2 million followers on Facebook and 1 million on Instagram. The information was revealed on March 7.

Charges of funneling nearly $10 million to US company Tenet Media to distribute content aligned with Russian interests have been announced against two RT employees in the context of the upcoming 2024 US presidential election. Sanctions against RT's parent companies, Rossiya Segodnya and TV Novosti, were announced on March 11 by Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

According to him, RT is used for cyber intelligence, influence, and obtaining weapons for the war against Ukraine, functioning as part of Russian intelligence.
