On October 15, 2024, US officials assured Lebanon that Israel would reduce attacks on Beirut and its surrounding areas. This was stated by Lebanese interim Prime Minister Najib Mikati, according to Reuters.

Mikati said: “During our contacts with American authorities last week, we received promises to reduce violence in the southern suburbs and Beirut.”

The prime minister did not disclose details, but noted that the United States is “taking serious measures against Israel to achieve a truce.” The Israeli army has not attacked Beirut since late last week, although it carried out strikes in a row for weeks before that, killing dozens of people.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu noted that Tel Aviv will take into account the position of the United States, but will make decisions in accordance with national interests.
