Qatar, under pressure from the United States, demanded that Hamas leaders leave Doha, a major change in Gulf politics. According to the FT, the request came about ten days ago after intensive negotiations with US officials.

In 2012, Doha allowed Hamas to open its political office after the Syrian war forced the group to leave Damascus. Qatar has become an important mediator between Israel and Hamas in the release of the hostages, but recent offers have been rejected, and Hamas leaders no longer want an American partner in any capital.

Hamas representatives are planning to move from Qatar to Turkey, which provides refuge for political figures.
