The director general of the UN International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, called on Iran and its world partners to achieve “concrete, tangible and visible results” in negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program, the Iranian branch of Radio Liberty reports.

Speaking to reporters in the Iranian capital on November 14 after a meeting with Iran's nuclear program chief Mohammad Eslami, Grossi pointed to mounting pressure on decisions related to backing Iran's proxies fighting Israel and President Trump, known for his tough stance on Tehran. .

“We know that what is needed now is some concrete, tangible and visible results that demonstrate that this joint work improves the situation, brings clarity and generally moves us away from conflict and, ultimately, war,” – Grossi said.

With reference to international tensions, the scope for diplomacy “is not getting bigger, it's getting smaller.”

Grossi also met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in Tehran on November 14. Araqchi, Iran's main negotiator for the 2015 agreement that barred Tehran from enriching uranium above 3.65%, said on social media X that talks with Grossi were “important and direct.”

He pledged to continue Iran's cooperation with the IAEA on nuclear nonproliferation “with courage and goodwill” and repeated Tehran's assertion that its nuclear program is “peaceful.”

However, Araqchi added that Iran would not negotiate “under pressure.”

Nuclear expert Eric Brewer told Radio Liberty that the lack of IAEA access to Iran's nuclear facilities increases the risk of producing more enriched uranium.

“I suspect that getting Iran to provide some information on this front is high on Director General Grossi's list,” he suggested.

It is expected that on this day the head of the IAEA will also hold talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Grossi's visit comes about two months before the inauguration of Trump, who during his first term in 2018 unilaterally withdrew from a landmark 2015 deal between Iran and world countries and reimposed harsh sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

The 2015 agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), granted Iran limited relief from international sanctions in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear program. The purpose of the agreement was to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Since Washington's withdrawal from the JCPOA, Iran has expanded its nuclear program and limited IAEA inspections of its nuclear facilities. The IAEA and the international community have expressed concern over reports that Tehran has significantly increased its stockpile of enriched uranium to 60 percent – well closer to the 90 percent level needed for nuclear weapons.
