Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas signed a decree according to which, in the event of his death, the chairman of the National Council, Rawhi Fattouh, will temporarily take over leadership. This document is called the “constitutional declaration”. The Palestinian agency Wafa confirmed this information.

According to the published document, if the position of head of the Palestinian Authority becomes vacant, the head of the Palestinian National Council will temporarily assume the duties. If it is not possible to hold elections within 90 days, the term of office may be extended for another period by decision of the Palestine Central Council.

Rauhi Fattouh already has management experience – after the death of Yasser Arafat in 2004, he temporarily headed the administration of the Palestinian Authority. Compared to 89-year-old Mahmoud Abbas, he is younger – he is 75 years old.
