Thousands of Lebanese return home after truce agreement

Thousands of Lebanese forced to flee their homes by the war between Israel and Hezbollah militants returned home on November 27, when a truce between the sides began to take effect.

If it lasts, the ceasefire would end the nearly 14-month conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which escalated in mid-September and threatened to drag Hezbollah's ally Iran and Israel's closest ally, the United States, into a wider war.

Hezbollah is both a militant group and a political party that controls most of southern Lebanon.

The United States has designated Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, and the European Union has blacklisted it as its paramilitary wing, but not as a political party.

The truce could improve the situation for the 1.2 million Lebanese forced to flee their homes by the fighting and the tens of thousands of Israelis displaced along the border.
