Far-left activist Andrei Khrzhanovsky was arrested for affixing a “Free Palestine” sticker to a monument to Shaldag special forces captain Shiloh Cohen, who was killed in a Hamas attack on October 7 in Sderot.
This prompted a complaint to the police, and the arrest took place in Tel Aviv, after which Khrzhanovsky was put into custody. The police requested an extension of the detention.
Khrzhanovsky's lawyer noted that this is a matter of freedom of speech and should not lead to criminal prosecution, given that the sticker was removed from the monument. The court concluded that Khrzhanovsky did not pose a danger and released him with the condition that he not approach the memorial sites and a bail of 15,000 shekels.
The father of the deceased Shilo Cohen, Ari Cohen, called the actions of the far left “meanness” and did not agree with calling this act a “desecration.” Captain Shilo Cohen went to Kibbutz Beeri to help with his brother’s weapons, where he died.
