US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during a visit to Baghdad, called on Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani to prevent Iran from supplying weapons or other equipment through this country to Syria. A US official told Bloomberg on Friday.

Blinken noted that Syria remains fragile, so Washington wants Iraq to prevent the flow of weapons that Iran-backed militant groups could use to destabilize the country.

Iran is likely weakened by the conflict with Israel, according to the official. Blinken also asked al-Sudani to take action against Iranian-backed Shiite militant groups in Iraq that are attacking American troops. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Blinken that Turkey is ready to pressure Hamas to reach an agreement on a ceasefire with Israel and the release of captive hostages, which would help end the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The Turkish government's position on the issue has changed and it has greater influence over Hamas leaders since they moved to Istanbul from Qatar, the official added. Blinken earlier met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss improving relations and developments in Syria.
