The leader of the Shas party, Aryeh Deri, said that the law on conscription of the ultra-Orthodox will be ready for voting in the second and third readings. He also commented on the statements of former Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, arguing that the status of Torah students must first be regulated, and then the issue of conscription should be discussed.
Aryeh Deri noted that Yitzhak Yosef grew up in a home where military service was valued, and therefore such statements of his are surprising. The Shas leader supported the idea of changes in the judicial system, but noted the need to do this wisely and deliberately, regarding the resignation of Gali Baharav-Miara and the composition of the judge selection commission.
The Israeli rabbi remains of the opinion that the ultra-Orthodox should not serve in the army, even if they do not study in yeshivas. He called on the ultra-Orthodox to ignore the summons to the army. The conflict around the issue of conscription continues to be relevant and causes a lot of controversy in society.
