The funeral of former US President Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29, will take place on January 9.
On this day, mourning will be declared in the United States in memory of the 39th president; by order of current President Joe Biden, federal departments will not work, and the New York Stock Exchange will be closed.
Biden also traditionally ordered the lowering of American flags around the world for 30 days.
Commemorative events will last several days. Carter's body will be flown from his hometown in Georgia to the state capital of Atlanta, where the public will be able to bid farewell to the president on January 4 and 5. On January 6, the body will be transported to Washington this summer, where it will be displayed in the Capitol building. This is a tradition of farewell to all presidents, starting with Abraham Lincoln.
On January 9, a memorial service will be held at the Washington National Cathedral, with President Biden speaking at his farewell. Carter will be buried in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
Flowers continue to arrive at Carter's home, despite his family's request that donations be given to the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta. This organization is engaged in protective and charitable activities.
Expressions of condolences continue to pour in over the death of Carter, who died at the age of 100. They were expressed by all former US presidents – Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, as well as President-elect Donald Trump. Trump emphasized that he always treated Carter with respect and warmth, despite differences, and noted that as president, Carter sought to do everything to improve the lives of Americans.
Jimmy Carter is a former Navy officer, Georgia state senator, and governor of the state. In 1976, he was nominated for the presidential election by the Democratic Party. He defeated Republican Herald Ford.
Carter ruled the United States from 1977 to 1981. His presidency was marked by a series of failures. During his years of work in the United States, there was a nuclear accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, the seizure of the US Embassy in Tehran and an unsuccessful attempt to liberate it by American special forces.
At the same time, he achieved success in international politics. In particular, he signed an agreement with the USSR on the limitation of strategic weapons, and also achieved a historic peace agreement between Israel and Egypt.
After losing the 1980 election to Ronald Reagan, Carter founded a foundation dedicated to promoting democratic and humanitarian values. He was actively involved in social activities and spoke with peace initiatives and in defense of human rights, and built housing for the poor. In 2002, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work “for his efforts to peacefully resolve conflicts around the world and fight for human rights.”
