This week, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump approved the allocation of $230 million to support Lebanon’s security forces. These measures are aimed at weakening the powerful armed group “Hezbollah,” Reuters reports, citing sources in Washington and Beirut.
Funding and Its Goals
According to a Lebanese source, $190 million is intended for the Lebanese Armed Forces, while an additional $40 million will go to the Internal Security Forces. This funding will allow the latter to focus on maintaining internal order, giving the Armed Forces the opportunity to engage in more important tasks.
Democratic Party congressman’s aides noted that the funds were allocated shortly before the end of the U.S. fiscal year on September 30. It is known that for a small country like Lebanon, this is a very significant amount.
Interestingly, the allocation of these funds occurred in the context of the Trump administration’s reduction of many foreign aid programs, which stated a priority on national interests. However, the situation in Lebanon appears strategically important, especially in light of the heterogeneous situation in the region.
The decision to allocate funds also emphasizes the importance of a peaceful resolution of the conflict in the Gaza Strip and the entire area, according to the publication.
The Role of the UN Resolution
A State Department representative emphasized support for Lebanon’s security forces, which seek to assert the country’s sovereignty and implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701. This resolution, adopted in August 2006, ended the last conflict between “Hezbollah” and Israel.
The conflict, which began a year ago, seriously weakened “Hezbollah” and destroyed many areas of Lebanon. On August 5, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called on the U.S.-supported army to develop a plan that would ensure the transfer of all weapons to the country’s security forces by the end of the year.
Opinions and Confrontations
Despite public calls for disarmament, “Hezbollah” expresses refusal to comply with these demands. Meanwhile, Iran continues to support the group, and pressure from opponents, including Washington, is only increasing. The current situation requires adherence to all agreements to achieve long-term stability both in Lebanon and in the region as a whole.
