The American Historical Association, which unites professionals in the field in the United States, condemned Israel's actions in Gaza. However, it is not yet clear what steps will be taken in practice regarding this decision. The annual conference brought together about 4,000 of the association's 10,000 members, and only 428 historians spoke in favor of the resolution, with 88 against it.
The draft resolution was proposed by the group Historians for Peace and Democracy and calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The document also proposes the creation of a committee to restore the educational system in the region, destroyed by Israeli actions. Most schools, universities, as well as archives, museums and cultural monuments were destroyed.
According to the resolution, Israel has destroyed the educational system in Gaza, making the study of Palestinian history virtually impossible. UN experts coined the term “schoolcide” in April 2024, describing the scale of destruction and damage caused to the region’s educational infrastructure.
