United Jewish Community of Ukraine expresses deep gratitude to everyone who preserves the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and calls on them to join events aimed at perpetuating the tragedy that forever changed the course of world history.
International Holocaust Remembrance Daywhich is celebrated on January 27, was established by the UN General Assembly in 2005. This day commemorates the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops on January 27, 1945. During the five years of the camp's existence, more than 1.1 million people died there, most of whom were Jews.
In Ukraine, this day has been celebrated at the state level since 2011. According to historians, the Holocaust became one of the largest tragedies of the 20th century, claiming the lives of about 6 million Jews, including more than 1.5 million in Ukraine.

History of the Holocaust in Ukraine
Ukraine was one of the countries most affected by the Nazi occupation policy. Babi Yar in Kyiv became a symbol of the Holocaust tragedy: more than 100 thousand people were shot here.
Memory connecting Israel and Ukraine
The memory of the Holocaust is not only part of Jewish but also Ukrainian identity. Israeli organization Yad Vashem recognized more than 2,600 Ukrainians as Righteous Among the Nations. These people saved Jews at the risk of their own lives.
“The Jewish community of Ukraine continues to strengthen historical and cultural ties with Israel in order to jointly fight to preserve the memory of the Holocaust and counter all forms of anti-Semitism,” notes United Jewish Community of Ukraine.
Conclusion
International Holocaust Remembrance Day reminds us of the importance of unity, tolerance and opposition to hatred. Ukraine and Israel, as countries with deep historical ties, continue to fight together to preserve the memory of the victims and the truth for future generations.
