The armed wing of Hamas announced the discovery of the body of an Israeli soldier who was previously held hostage in the Gaza Strip. Preparations for the transfer of the remains to Israel have already begun, reports Reuters.
Search and Discovery
The body was found in the Shuja’iyya area, east of Gaza City. The Israeli side provided access to the site for Hamas search teams and the International Committee of the Red Cross. This was made possible by the current ceasefire agreement.
Israel, however, stated that the remains of three people returned from Gaza are not the bodies of hostages. Under the truce in effect since October 10, Hamas has already returned 20 live hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
Current Situation
So far, 20 out of 28 hostage bodies have been transferred, while Israel has returned 270 bodies of Palestinians killed since the beginning of the conflict. Despite the ceasefire, tensions remain. The Israeli army reported strikes on militants allegedly violating the troop withdrawal line. Gaza’s Ministry of Health reported new casualties among the civilian population.
International Reaction
The United States circulated a draft resolution in the UN Security Council on security forces in Gaza. This step underscores the complexity and multilayered nature of the current situation.
The interaction of the parties under the ceasefire remains fragile, but each step towards dialogue is a chance for a more stable future.
