Israel's Foreign Ministry summoned Turkey's deputy ambassador on August 2, 2024, after the Turkish embassy in Tel Aviv lowered its flag in mourning for slain Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

“The State of Israel will not tolerate manifestations of mourning for a murderer like Ismail Haniyeh,” said Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz.

Haniyeh was killed in Tehran at the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Iran and its allies, including Hamas and Hezbollah, blamed Israel for the killing and promised revenge.
