Israel's Foreign Ministry summoned Turkey's deputy ambassador on August 2, 2024, after the Turkish embassy in Tel Aviv lowered its flag in mourning for slain Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
“The State of Israel will not tolerate manifestations of mourning for a murderer like Ismail Haniyeh,” said Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz.
Haniyeh was killed in Tehran at the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Iran and its allies, including Hamas and Hezbollah, blamed Israel for the killing and promised revenge.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a day of national mourning for Haniyeh. Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Oncu Keceli said “peace cannot be achieved by killing Israelis and foreigners.”
Tensions between Israel and Turkey have increased over the Gaza war, which has killed scores of Palestinians. Turkey has blocked cooperation between Israel and NATO over the Gaza incident and suspended bilateral trade.
