Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “the military will continue to operate against the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen following yesterday's attack on Tel Aviv.”
“Just as we acted decisively against the terrorists of Iran’s axis of evil, we will act against the Houthis,” Netanyahu said in a video message on Sunday.
He added that “the United States, along with other countries, views the Houthis as a threat not only to international shipping, but also to international order.”
“I ask you, citizens of Israel, to be patient, continue to demonstrate the steadfastness you have shown previously, and strictly follow the instructions of the home front command. If you do this, we will take care of the rest,” the head of government said.
At the end of his speech, Netanyahu reiterated that “the results for the Houthis will be the same as the results of other terrorist organizations that oppose Israel.”
Earlier, Israeli warplanes carried out a series of strikes on energy and port infrastructure in Yemen in response to hundreds of missile and drone attacks carried out by the Houthis since the start of the Gaza war 14 months ago.
US troops are deployed to the region in part due to threats from the Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen.
The United States has previously struck Houthi targets in Yemen several times, including in response to their attacks on US and allied shipping and warships. Israel has also bombed Yemen several times, including the important port of Hodeidah.
Since October last year, the Houthis have regularly attacked foreign ships they say are associated with Israel in the Arabian Sea or the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. Two ships were sunk and others were damaged. The Houthis also managed to shoot down several US reconnaissance drones.
