Nikita Vasilenko, a professor at the Educational and Scientific Institute of Journalism of the Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, found himself at the center of a scandal because of his statements on the pro-Russian YouTube channel of Alexander Shelest, the ex-host of the banned Newsone channel.
He said that sexually starved Ukrainian women are awaiting the arrival of 40,000 “foreign peacekeepers,” who, in his opinion, will help improve the demographic situation in the country.
Vasilenko compared these “foreign peacekeepers” to the German military, from whom, he said, “children were born” after World War II, but later spoke out against bringing thousands of peacekeepers to Ukraine.
Ukrainian students opposed the professor’s statements and demanded his dismissal. They also turned to Ombudsman Dmitry Lubinets.
Professor Vasilenko also became the subject of controversy due to sexist remarks and cases of sexual harassment of female students.
The professor’s actions caused indignation both in Ukrainian society and among the journalistic community. Human Rights Commissioner Dmitry Lubinets stated the need to conduct an investigation and take action in this case.
The name of Nikita Vasilenko became widely known due to his public activities on pro-Russian channels owned by Viktor Medvedchuk and Yevgeny Muraev, before the Russian occupation of Ukraine began in 2022.
