Senior Lebanese officials have asked Washington and Paris to pressure Israel to adhere to a ceasefire following a series of military operations on Lebanese soil that Beirut says are violations, two senior Lebanese political sources told Reuters.
Deadly Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah rocket attacks on an Israeli military post on Dec. 2 threatened a U.S.-brokered truce between the two countries less than a week after it took effect.
Lebanon's interim Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a close Hezbollah ally, held talks on Lebanon's behalf with White House officials and the French president, expressing concern about the state of the truce, the sources said. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrault spoke with his Israeli counterpart Gideon Sa'ar on December 2, stressing the need to respect the ceasefire.
Israel says its military actions in Lebanon are aimed at ensuring compliance with the ceasefire and do not violate truce obligations.
