The escalation of tensions between Israel and Hezbollah has raised concerns about a larger regional conflict that could involve not only the United States but also Iran. According to the White House, President Joe Biden is closely monitoring developments, Reuters reports.
Senior U.S. officials are in regular contact with their Israeli counterparts and support Israel's right to self-defense and work to ensure regional stability, National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett said.
Hezbollah fired hundreds of rockets and drones into Israel on Sunday in retaliation for the killing of a senior commander in Beirut last month, the Iran-backed movement said. The Israeli military, assessing Hezbollah's readiness to attack, struck targets in Lebanon.
Hezbollah said it fired more than 320 Katyusha rockets at Israel, hitting 11 military targets. The attack was in retaliation for the killing of senior militant commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut. The strikes occurred during a meeting of negotiators in Cairo to discuss swapping Israeli and foreign hostages for Palestinian prisoners.
