Right-wing leaders have made it clear that they intend to topple the government as soon as the prime minister agrees to a cease-fire in Gaza. They see the situation as an opportunity to expand Jewish settlements in the West Bank, which would require a prolonged military occupation of Palestinian territory, notes Bloomberg Opinion columnist Mark Champion.

If the government falls, Netanyahu, now out of power, will face lengthy trials on charges of fraud, breach of trust and corruption as an ordinary citizen. He may also face prison time. Many Israelis believe that Netanyahu makes decisions based on personal rather than national interests, which breeds mistrust.

“Netanyahu continues to receive domestic support for his efforts to destroy Hamas. But as the tragic consequences of continuing the war for the hostages in Gaza become clear, distrust of his motives is dividing the nation,” the columnist notes.
