Women in the army are not just a necessity but a logical step towards equality. Ivan Timochko, chairman of the Council of Reservists of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, is confident that the participation of women in military service will break stereotypes and reduce societal resistance.

The Role of Women in the Army

In an interview with “Telegraf” on October 22, 2025, Timochko noted that the formation of a female reserve is a process provided by law. The state must consider specialties useful during mobilization: medics, accountants, lawyers. Women are capable of performing tasks on par with men, both at the front and in the rear.

He emphasized:

“Considering professions as ‘male’ or ‘female’ is a mistake. Women’s service is voluntary, and the less women ‘hide,’ the fewer voices there will be for compulsory conscription.”

Global Experience

Timochko cited examples of countries where women’s service is the norm: Israel, Scandinavian countries, Austria. Ukrainian society should not fear or exaggerate the problem.

Military service is not only about combat. The information sphere, cyberspace, accounting, and jurisprudence are areas where physical strength is not the main factor. These fields ensure the stability and security of the army.

Public Perception

Politicians often speculate on the topic of women’s mobilization, creating scandals and distracting attention from real issues. Timochko noted: “When discussing women’s registration, populists put on a show. This distracts from a substantive conversation.”

The enemy does not distinguish gender during attacks. It is important for Ukrainians to discuss women’s participation in the army thoughtfully, without manipulation, based on real needs.

Changes in Legislation

Recently, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine introduced changes allowing the automatic registration of women for military service without personal presence, but only for those with medical or pharmaceutical education.

Timochko also mentioned that after basic training, students take an oath and become reservists, subject to conscription after 25 years if they are fit for service.

These steps are not just a formality but a move towards a more inclusive army, where everyone can contribute to overall security.
