In the building that became a target for Israeli military in 2007, remnants of radioactive materials are allegedly preserved. At that time, this place, located in Deir ez-Zor, was described as an ordinary military base, although the leadership of Syria, headed by Bashar al-Assad, had just completed its military career.

In its report published in 2011, the IAEA concluded that this facility could have been a secret reactor, the existence of which the Syrian authorities did not notify the agency’s inspectors. It became known that samples taken from the site revealed a “significant amount of natural uranium particles.” The study showed that this uranium was obtained as a result of human activity, which, according to the document, implies its anthropogenic origin. It is specified that the term “natural” in this context denotes the absence of uranium enrichment.

The current Syrian authorities could not explain the origin of the found particles. Nevertheless, the new government in June granted the IAEA permission to investigate the site again and collect new samples.
