The risk of a wider war in the Middle East has diminished in the near term after Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah traded air strikes without escalation. But Iran remains a danger as it considers a strike on Israel, a US general said. Charles Brown, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told Reuters after a trip to the Middle East.
Brown noted that the Hezbollah attack is just one of two threats to Israel in recent weeks. Iran has also threatened to attack over the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month. “Iran’s response will determine Israel’s response, which will determine whether there will be a broader conflict or not,” Brown said.
The general also warned of risks from Iran's allies in countries such as Iraq, Syria and Jordan, which have attacked US troops, and from Yemen's Houthis, who have launched attacks in the Red Sea and even launched drones toward Israel.
Earlier, Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said the U.S. did not shoot down missiles or drones in Hezbollah's massive attack on Israel over the weekend, but provided Israel with intelligence to track the attacks. It also did not provide intelligence for Israel to launch a preemptive strike against Hezbollah.
