On August 12, 2024, the Turkish Defense Minister stated that Türkiye is committed to its NATO commitments.

President Tayyip Erdogan has previously stated Turkey's desire to become a partner of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), created in 2001 by Russia, China and Central Asian countries as an alternative to Western alliances.

Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guller stressed that Turkey's NATO membership does not hinder the development of relations with the SCO. He noted that Turkey's priority is to fulfill its obligations to NATO and strengthen solidarity with partners so that the alliance is decisive and strong.
