On November 1, 2024, the United States asked Lebanon to declare a unilateral ceasefire with Israel to resume negotiations to end hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, senior Lebanese political and diplomatic sources told Reuters.
US Ambassador Amos Hochstein relayed the information to Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati this week as the US stepped up diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire between Israel and the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah. Mikati's office confirmed that the US had proposed a unilateral ceasefire, but the Lebanese government's position was for a ceasefire from both sides and implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
The Lebanese Prime Minister expressed hope for a ceasefire agreement with Israel to be announced within days of his conversation with his American counterpart.
