Tragedy in Uman (Ukraine): 25-year-old Israeli dies, suspected carbon monoxide poisoning

A tragedy occurred in the city of Uman: a citizen of Israel approximately 25 years old was found dead in his apartment. According to preliminary data, the cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning.

The man was discovered by relatives shortly before the onset of Shabbat — he was unconscious. Emergency services were called to the scene. Volunteers from Ichud Hatzalah conducted resuscitation measures, but he could not be saved. Death was pronounced at the scene.

An international group ZAKA got involved in the case, which, together with the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and local authorities, is handling the documentation and preparation for transporting the body to Israel for burial.

According to volunteers, a gas heating system was installed in the apartment. Presumably, a gas leak from the heater led to the accumulation of carbon monoxide and caused the death. Final conclusions will be made after all checks are completed.

It is known that the deceased left behind a wife and five children. His wife and one of the children were in Israel at the time of the tragedy. It was one of the children, who was in Uman, who first discovered the father unconscious and called the rescuers.

The head of the international division of ZAKA, Baruch Nidem, reported that volunteers are working in close coordination with the family and diplomatic structures, accompanying the relatives of the deceased at all stages — from document processing to organizing the funeral.
