US President-elect Donald Trump has announced new members of his incoming administration and is expected to select Florida Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State.
The 78-year-old Republican has declared immigration official Tom Homan the nation's “border czar,” tasking him with his key domestic responsibility of mass deportation of undocumented migrants.
On foreign policy, the New York Times is writing about its intention to tap Rubio, whom it views as a potential candidate for secretary of state, while fellow Florida hack Michael Waltz is preparing to be named national security adviser. Both men have strong hawkish views on China, which they view as a threat and challenge to US economic and military power.
Marco Rubio is the son of Cuban immigrants and one of the supporters of the active foreign policy of the United States. He is known for his sharp criticism of authoritarian regimes – Chinese, Iranian, Cuban. This year, he was one of 15 Republican senators who voted against a $95 billion aid package for Ukraine and Israel.
In his recent interviews, he said that Ukraine needs to focus on reaching an agreement with Russia, even if this does not lead to the return of all Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia. The conflict, he said, “must be ended.”
“I'm not a supporter of Russia, but unfortunately the reality is that the war in Ukraine will end as a result of a peace agreement,” Rubin said in a recent interview with NBC. Donald Trump won the presidential elections in the United States; the change of administration and transfer of power should take place on January 20.
