During his telephone conversation with newly elected US President Donald Trump, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas congratulated Trump on winning the presidential election.

Abbas also expressed his willingness to work with Trump to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on international legitimacy. Trump, in turn, stated his intention “to stop the war and looks forward to working with the Palestinian leader to promote peace in the Middle East.”

Relations between the two leaders remain difficult following Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, which led to a breakdown in relations between the Palestinian Authority and the United States.
