UN human rights chief calls on countries to 'respond to Israel's violations of international law'

On September 9, 2024, the head of the UN Human Rights Office said the top priority was ending the nearly year-long war in Gaza.

He asked countries to take effective measures in response to the “flagrant disregard” for international law in the “Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories.”

Hamas attacks have killed 1,200 Israelis and taken 250 hostage. The conflict has also led to increased violence in the “Israeli-occupied West Bank.”

According to the head of the Office, ending the war and preventing regional conflict has become an urgent priority. He stressed that “states should not and cannot disregard international law, including binding decisions of the UN Security Council and orders of the International Court, in this or any other situation.”

Bloomberg described the reasons why Netanyahu “is unwilling to agree to a cease-fire with Hamas. The far right has threatened to overthrow the government if the Israeli prime minister agrees to a cease-fire in Gaza.”
