What is Vyshyvanka Day?
Vyshyvanka Day is an international holiday celebrated on the third Thursday of May. On this day, people all over the world wear traditional Ukrainian vyshyvankas to express their commitment to Ukrainian cultural traditions. The holiday is not tied to religious or state events and is open to all who wish to participate. Its goal is to preserve and popularize Ukrainian culture and unite people of different nationalities through shared cultural values.
This year, Vyshyvanka Day will be celebrated on May 15,
And the events in Haifa, as part of the celebration, will take place on May 16.
Vyshyvanka symbolizes the history and culture of Ukraine, being an important element of national identity and pride.
Unique Vyshyvanka Collection
One of the main highlights of the event will be the exhibition of 24 unique women’s shirts, which belong to different regions of Ukraine. Olga Savina will bring vyshyvankas to Haifa, some of which date back over 100 years.
These shirts are true works of art, each carrying the symbolism and culture of its region. Vyshyvankas from the following regions will be featured:
- Poltava
- Sumy
- Kiev
- Donetsk
- Transcarpathia
This is a unique opportunity to see and study ancient Ukrainian shirts that hold not only decorative value but also history, reflecting the cultural heritage of various regions of Ukraine.
Lecture on Vyshyvankas
Olga Savina will give an exciting lecture dedicated to the history of vyshyvankas. During the lecture, she will talk about different types of vyshyvankas, the symbols they contain, as well as the meaning of colors and patterns. The lecture will cover several important aspects:
- Cut and patterns — how the forms and styles of vyshyvankas have changed over the centuries.
- Symbolism and colors — what different colors and patterns on the shirts mean.
- Creation technology — from flax sowing to hand embroidery and stitching of shirts.
This will be not only an educational lecture but also an immersion into the depth of Ukrainian culture, where every participant will be able to learn more about the significance of the vyshyvanka as a cultural symbol.
Musical Performances: Original Songs and Ukrainian Folk Songs
What is Ukrainian culture without music? The event will also feature a performance by Igor Ageyenko ( +380ID project) , a singer and author of Ukrainian songs. His performance will feature both original compositions and well-known folk songs that have become symbols of Ukrainian musical tradition.
Igor Ageyenko will not only present his works but also sing popular Ukrainian folk songs with the participants of the event. The music will create an atmosphere of unity and show how important it is to preserve our traditions in a changing world.
Children’s Activities: Pajama Library and Creative Workshops
For the youngest participants of the event, there will be a zone with a Pajama Library, where children can create themed crafts and get acquainted with Ukrainian culture through games and creativity. The workshops will allow children to not only develop their creative abilities but also immerse themselves in the holiday atmosphere.
Additionally, children will have the opportunity to participate in various games related to Ukrainian traditions and embroidery. This will help young participants learn more about the culture and have fun at the same time.
