Israeli negotiators led by Mossad chief David Barnea have left for Cairo to negotiate a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, The Times of Israel reported on Thursday, citing sources. CNN also reported that the US will send a delegation to Egypt as a mediator. CIA chief William Burns will lead the behind-the-scenes talks.
Ceasefire talks due to begin in Cairo on Thursday have been postponed until next week to discuss new proposals, The National reported. The talks involve Israel, Hamas and mediators Egypt, Qatar and the US.
The Israeli side criticizes the demands of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to leave the military in the Philadelphia and Netzarim corridors. Egypt and Hamas do not agree to such conditions. Negotiators also criticize Netanyahu.
The Philadelphi Corridor is the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. Netzarim divides the strip into northern and southern zones. The Israeli military controls these areas during the military operation against Palestinian groups.
