One of Ukraine's six new F-16 fighter jets crashed due to pilot error on Monday, the WSJ reported. The plane crashed shortly after arriving in Ukraine and was likely not brought down by enemy fire, although the incident occurred during a Russian missile attack.
The mayor of Lutsk announced the death of pilot Oleksiy Mes, one of the first Ukrainian pilots trained to fly the F-16.
Ukraine used fighter jets in combat for the first time to repel Russian missiles during strikes this week, Volodymyr Zelensky said.
The loss of the F-16 was a serious blow to Kyiv, which had long asked for these aircraft to be transferred to it. In total, the Ukrainian army received ten F-16s, but the crash was a tragic loss and the subject of an investigation by the Defense Ministry commission.
