France is convening a ministerial-level conference in Paris on October 24 to resolve Lebanon's problems related to Israel's military conflict with Hezbollah. Nicolas de Rivière said France would organize a conference on October 24 to support Lebanese institutions, including the Lebanese armed forces.
According to information provided by the French Permanent Representative to the UN, the conference will be attended by Lebanese partner states, the UN, the European Union, as well as international and regional organizations and representatives of civil society. There are 700 French troops in Lebanon from the UN Interim Force (UNIFIL), who are deployed along the Blue Line.
The Permanent Representative expressed concern about Israeli shelling of UNIFIL positions and called for an immediate ceasefire. Two UN peacekeepers were wounded as a result of Israeli shelling of a watchtower at a UNIFIL base. The Israeli military also fired at a UNIFIL office in southern Lebanon and a shelter where peacekeepers were located.
According to UNIFIL, Israel has repeatedly attacked the force's headquarters and adjacent facilities. Paris calls for a political solution to the situation in Lebanon and supports the idea of an immediate ceasefire.
