The Memorial Evening is organized by several important initiatives and organizations, including “Point of Gathering” and “Memorial Society,” in collaboration with the Ukrainian poetry Telegram channel “CHUYESH?”. Together, they offer residents of Israel a unique opportunity to become part of the global network supporting Ukraine.
This event will be an important milestone in supporting Ukraine and a reminder of the ongoing Russian aggression.
Importance of the Event
The theme of memory and support for Ukraine is at the center of attention for all Jewish and Ukrainian communities in Israel. The event is organized in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, which has been destroying the lives of millions for over three years. The Memorial Evening in Haifa is not only a cultural event but also an act of civic responsibility, a call to support the victims of this tragedy.
As Anastasia-Esti Arceva, one of the event organizers, explains,
“The anniversary of the terrible tragedy — the full-scale Russian aggression against Ukraine — is approaching. On February 24, my friends and I, activists of the anti-war movement, are organizing a Memorial Evening and Support event.”
“At the event, works by two artists will be exhibited, Ukrainian poetry will be performed, and a musical group will perform.
And most importantly, we will be signing letters to Ukrainian political prisoners in Russian jails. This is very important: remembering the fallen, supporting the living. We look forward to seeing you🙏.”
Program of the Event
Exhibition of Paintings and Performances
The evening will be accompanied by an art exhibition featuring works by two artists, Viktor Melamed and Anton Logov. Melamed, a Russian-Israeli artist, is known for his portraits of those who died in the war, which he paints to preserve their memory and tell the world about the brutality of Russian aggression. Logov, a Ukrainian artist and curator, will present his works from the military series, reflecting the emotions of people in the heat of war.
Poetry and Music
In addition to the paintings, the event includes Ukrainian poetry performed by Anastasia-Esti Arceva and Hanna Kats. These works will raise issues of pain and hope brought by the war, as well as create an atmosphere for reflection on Ukraine’s future.
No less important will be the musical performance by the Israeli folk group “Synki”. The group, known for their albums reflecting a philosophy of protest, will perform at the event to support those fighting for the freedom and independence of Ukraine.
Support for Political Prisoners
A separate block of the event will be dedicated to supporting Ukrainian citizens convicted on political charges in Russia. The organizers emphasized the importance of reminding everyone that the fight for freedom continues not only on the battlefield but also in prisons.
Why is this Event Important for Israel?
Israel and Ukraine share deep historical and cultural ties. Many Jews in Israel have Ukrainian roots, and for them, supporting Ukraine is not just a political decision but a personal responsibility. The event in Haifa is an opportunity for Israelis not only to honor the memory of the fallen but also to actively express their support for Ukraine during this difficult time.
Conclusion
The event in Haifa on February 24, 2025, will be an important step in supporting Ukraine and strengthening the bonds between the Jewish and Ukrainian peoples in Israel. It not only reminds us of what is happening in Ukraine but also gives each of us the opportunity to contribute to the cause of memory and the fight for peace.
