On October 11, 2026, the Israeli embassy in Ukraine reported a meeting of a delegation of journalists from Ukraine at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel. Among the interlocutors were former Israeli ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky, head of the Eurasian Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Alex Goldman-Sheyman, and Hila Engelhard, representing the ministry’s economic direction. NANews has already reported on this meeting and other points of the visit — visiting the Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem and the memorial to the victims of the Holodomor of 1932–1933 in Ukraine.

Israel studies Russian drones from Ukraine: what Brodsky told at the meeting with Ukrainian journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

And on October 13, 2026, the Ukrainian “Economic Truth” published a report on Russian weapons received by Israel from Ukraine. The publication directly indicated that Brodsky spoke about this during a meeting with representatives of Ukrainian media at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel.

“Former Israeli ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky spoke about this during a meeting with media representatives at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel.,” – quote.

By place, time, and participants, it seems to be the same conversation with the Ukrainian delegation. However, “Economic Truth” does not specify whether its journalist was present personally and who exactly asked the question about Russian drones. This does not prevent linking the two reports, but does not allow asserting that the question came from a correspondent of this publication.

What exactly did Brodsky confirm

The question concerned the new Russian jet strike drone “Geran-5”: did the Israeli side request samples of this model from Ukraine?

Quote: “To the journalist’s question whether Israel approached Ukraine for samples of the new Russian jet drone “Geran-5″, the former Israeli ambassador to Ukraine replied that such interaction between the countries takes place.”

The response of the former ambassador is quoted by “Economic Truth” as follows:

“Without details, but such interaction takes place. We received samples of weapons for study.”

Also a quote: “He also confirmed that there is interaction between Ukraine and Israel in studying samples of weapons used in the war. According to him, Israel received individual samples from Ukraine, but the diplomat did not disclose details of this cooperation.”

Here an important boundary is drawn: the receipt of weapon samples is confirmed by Brodsky’s words, the transfer to Israel of specifically “Geran-5” — not yet.

Explaining Israel’s interest, the diplomat pointed to the threat of similar systems appearing in groups with which the country is at war.

His assessment sounded harsh: “Jet drones today are the number one problem for the whole world.” According to Brodsky, the country that first finds an effective means of protection will gain an advantage, and others will begin to adopt its solution. Israel is working on laser and other interception means, but a universal answer to all such threats does not yet exist.

Back in June, NANews — News of Israel | Nikk.Agency analyzed in detail Brodsky’s interview about air defense, drones, and Israel’s complex relations with Ukraine. At that time, the diplomat spoke about the possibilities of military-technological cooperation. Now the practical side of it has become known.

Why “Geran-5” interests Israel

This is not the familiar Shahed-136 with a piston engine, known to Israelis from Iranian weapons. “Geran-5” uses a turbojet engine. In January, Ukrainian military intelligence revealed its characteristics: cruising speed 450–600 km/h, range about 950 kilometers, warhead weight 90 kilograms. The device was found to have a Chinese TELEFLY engine, a Russian “Kometa-M12” navigation system, and foreign-made electronic components.

The GUR — Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine — noted the similarity of the design with the Iranian Karrar drone. For Israel, such a parallel is not at all abstract: Iran and the armed organizations it supports use drones against Israeli targets. The similarity of developments, however, does not prove that “Geran-5” is already in service with these groups.

A jet target has a different speed. The air defense (AD) calculation has less time to detect the device, determine the threat, and choose a method of interception. And in the Ukrainian sky, these problems are already being solved in practice.

What Ukraine can show Israel

On September 30, the Ukrainian company SkyFall reported the destruction of “Geran-5” by the P1-SUN JetKiller interceptor drone. On October 12, former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov spoke about the new Ukrainian interceptor: according to him, Lasar’s Group crews shot down two jet “Geran-5” heading to Kyiv. From the start of development to the first confirmed interceptions, according to his report, a month passed.

These reports do not mean that Kyiv transferred the interception technology itself to Israel. But they show why Ukrainian experience already represents independent value: in Ukraine, they study the wreckage of Russian drones and simultaneously test their own means of protection against them.

In December 2025, the Israeli army received the first high-energy laser interception system Iron Beam — “Or Eitan”. It was created as a supplement to the “Iron Dome”, not a replacement for the entire multi-layered air defense. There is no data yet on successful tests of this system against “Geran-5”.

A curious change in the usual picture of Israeli-Ukrainian relations emerges. Previously, Kyiv’s requests to provide Israeli defense systems were more often at the center of discussions. Now Israel itself is interested in the results of studying the weapons that Russia uses against Ukraine.

A defense alliance or an agreement on joint production of interceptors does not follow from Brodsky’s words. But the confirmed receipt of samples shows that Ukraine is becoming for Israel not only a country in need of support but also a source of military experience that may be useful for protecting Israeli skies.
