Living in war requires courage every day, but the story of a 65-year-old Donbass resident who crossed the front line on foot shakes me to the core. Vasily Petrovich (name changed), a resident of the village of Shevchenko in the occupied Pokrovsky district of the Donetsk region, not only found the strength to escape from the occupation, but is also heading towards a new life in Israel.

The story of this incredible journey was told by a local publication Caprias well as volunteers humanitarian mission “Snowdrop”.

Four days under the drone of drones

Vasily lived all his life in the small village of Shevchenko. He had a house, a small store and a car in which he delivered goods. However, after the start of the occupation, life in the village became unbearable.

“At first Vasily tried to survive the occupation, but it was too hard. Four days ago he decided: it’s time to go,” the volunteers said.

The path to freedom turned out to be deadly dangerous. Vasily walked at night, avoiding main roads to avoid shelling. He crossed mined fields, heard the drone of drones overhead, and artillery shells exploding next to him.

The journey took four long days. On this way, the man passed through Grishino and Dobropillya to end up in territory controlled by Ukraine.

Family reunion

After leaving the occupation, Vasily Petrovich was helped to contact his daughter and son who live abroad. Next week the man plans to go to his daughter in Israel, where a new life awaits him.

“Now Vasily will be able to start all over again, safe, close to his family. This is the main thing he has been dreaming about in recent years,” say volunteers of the Snowdrop mission.

Life under occupation: the price of freedom

The story of Vasily Petrovich is just one of many examples of the trials people go through when they find themselves in a combat zone. The difficulties of life under occupation, the constant threat of shelling and the inability to live freely force thousands of people to look for a way to salvation.
