Several US troops were injured in a drone attack in Syria, Reuters reports.

Several U.S. troops were wounded in a drone strike in Syria on Friday, a U.S. official told Reuters. It was the second major attack on U.S. troops in recent days amid rising tensions in the Middle East. The U.S. military initially said there were no casualties, but later it emerged that some had suffered minor injuries, including smoke inhalation.

An official speaking on condition of anonymity said Saturday that the injuries were not serious, but the soldiers were still being examined for head injuries. Several of the wounded soldiers were being sent elsewhere for further examination. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but Iranian-backed groups have carried out similar attacks in the past.

The drone attack in Syria comes shortly after an attack on U.S. troops in Iraq on Monday by an Iran-backed militant group that “wounded seven service members.” The reports of U.S. casualties come as tensions in the Middle East rise and preparations are underway for possible new attacks on Israel by Iran and its allies.
