On January 30, 2025, a ceremony was held in Lviv, at which the families of two “righteous people of the world” were awarded.
These people during the Second World War risked their lives, saving Jews from Nazi terror.
According to the official figures of the Israeli Memorial “Yad Vashem”, the title “Righteous of the Peoples of the World” was awarded to 2707 citizens of Ukraine. This is the fourth indicator in the world after Poland, the Netherlands and France.
In 2024, a similar ceremony was already held, then the awards were assigned six Ukrainians from the Lviv, Volyn and Ternopil regions posthumously. This year, the memory of the heroes was again immortalized.
The honorary title was awarded Yaroslav and Severin Mirovichov from Lviv, And also Ekaterina Fastig from Yaremche. Their medals and diplomas received descendants: Love Karpinskaya and Veronika Fastiga.
Russian propaganda has been trying to present Lviv as “the most Bandera” and “anti -Semitic” city of Ukraine for years. However, reality breaks these myths. Lviv is a city where for centuries various communities coexisted peacefully, and its Jewish history has been rooted in the Middle Ages.
Israeli ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky, speaking at the ceremony, He emphasized the importanceb preservation of the memory of the exploits of Ukrainians, who, despite the deadly threat, saved the Jews.
“More than two thousand Ukrainians are already worn by this title. But in fact, those who worthy of him are much more, and we continue to look for new facts, to open forgotten names. I thank the descendants of the righteous for preserving the memory and assureing that we will always remember their feat, ”said Michael Brodsky.
The ceremony was also attended by representatives of local authorities, public figures and journalists.
The righteous of the peoples of the world: who can get the title
The term “righteous of the peoples of the world” was officially approved in 1953 by the International Institute for the Preservation of the Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust “Yad Vashem”. In 1963, clear criteria for conferring this honorary title were identified.
The title can be obtained only by non -Jews who saved the Jews during the Holocaust, not counting on a reward. The following conditions are also taken into account when assigning:
- Only Jewish organizations can nominate a candidate.
- Those who helped members of their family or Jews who have passed into Christianity are not considered.
- Help should be significant and repeated.
- The Savior should not receive a material reward for this.
Each awarded receives a special medal with an engraved name, and his name is knocked out on the memorial wall in the Garden of the Righteous in the territory of the Yad Vashem memorial complex in Jerusalem.
Ukrainian righteous and historical memory
Ukraine made a significant contribution to the salvation of the Jewish population during the Holocaust. According to historical data, only 128 people were awarded in the Lviv region, among whom was Blessed Klimenty Sheptytsky, Metropolitan’s brother Andrei Sheptitsky.
“The words are engraved on the medals of the righteous of the peoples of the world:“ He who saved one soul saved the whole world. ” I believe that with our people, our warriors, God's help, friendship and cooperation with partners, in particular with Israel, we will save Ukraine and peace from darkness, ”said Maxim Kozitsky, head of the Lviv regional military administration.
On January 27, the whole world celebrated the International Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust Victims. It was on this day in 1945 that the troops of the First Ukrainian Front liberated the largest Nazi concentration camp Aushvitz-Birkenau.
According to historical data, during the Holocaust, the Nazis destroyed 6 million Jews, among them about 1.5 million children. In Ukraine, 1.5 million Jews were killed by the Nazis.
Lviv: True against the myths of Russian propaganda
Russian propaganda has been trying to present Lviv as “the most Bandera” and “anti -Semitic” city of Ukraine for years. However, reality breaks these myths. Lviv is a city where for centuries various communities coexisted peacefully, and its Jewish history has been rooted in the Middle Ages.
One of the most good denials of the Kremlin lies was the ceremony, held on January 30, 2025, at which the families of Ukrainians who saved Jews during the Holocaust were awarded the “righteous of the peoples of the world”. These people, risking their own lives, hid Jews from the Nazis, proving that the Ukrainians were not accomplices of the Holocaust, as Russia was trying to impose.
Jewish heritage of Lviv
Lviv has always been one of the largest Jewish centers of Eastern Europe. Before World War II, the Jewish population amounted to about 30% of the city’s inhabitants. Jewish schools, theaters, newspapers worked here, and Lviv rabbis were known far beyond the borders of Ukraine.
During the German occupation, Lviv became a place of terrible crimes against Jews. In the ghetto and camps, tens of thousands of people were destroyed. However, hundreds of Ukrainians, among whom were Lviv, hid Jews in their homes, saved them from death, and helped to flee.
Today in Lviv, one of the largest Jewish cultural centers of Ukraine operates, events are held on the memory of the victims of the Holocaust. There are organizations supporting the restoration of Jewish heritage. In 2023, a new memorial exposition about the Jews of Lviv during the Second World War was opened in the city.
Russian lie and reality
The Kremlin media for years spread misinformation, calling Lviv “the city of anti -Semites”. However, the facts say the opposite. Lviv became one of the first Ukrainian cities, which back in the 1990s began to openly talk about the tragedy of the Holocaust, restore commemorative places and perpetuate the feat of Ukrainians who saved Jews.
Today's solemn ceremonies in memory of the “righteous of the peoples of the world” is another evidence that Lviv has never been the way Russian propaganda is trying to present it. This city carefully stores the memory of the Jewish past and develops a dialogue between Ukrainians and Jews, destroying stereotypes imposed from the outside.
