“After the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, the number of our citizens who sought temporary refuge in Israel at various times was 20-25 thousand.”

“After (the attack on Israel by the Hamas group, recognized as terrorist in the EU and the US — editor’s note) on October 7, there were fewer of them — now we can talk about about 12-13 thousand people who remain here,” said Korniychuk.

According to him, “the vast majority of Ukrainian citizens who are currently in Israel are employed and, as a rule, have relatives or close friends there.”

“Nobody just comes here, understanding that the conditions for temporary asylum are better in Europe,” the Ukrainian ambassador noted.

In this context, he recalled that “Israel does not provide our compatriots with full refugee status, housing or financial security.”

Korniychuk reported that “the Ukrainian embassy managed to negotiate for the Israeli side to extend our citizens’ tourist visas and grant them the right to work so that they could support themselves, as well as obtain medical insurance for a certain category of elderly citizens, which is paid for by the Israeli government.”
