The night of September 9-10, 2024, was a real disaster for Russia: numerous drones attacked regions of the country, including the capital Moscow. The authorities said that 20 drones were aimed at the Moscow region, calling it the largest attack on the capital during the entire conflict. In total, according to Russian authorities, air defense destroyed 144 Ukrainian drones in several regions: 72 drones were shot down in the Bryansk region, 20 in Moscow, 14 in Kursk, 13 in Tula, eight in Belgorod, seven in Kaluga, five in Voronezh, four in Lipetsk and one in Oryol.
Attack on Moscow and its environs
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported the first incident in Lyubertsy at around 2:30 a.m., where the Defense Ministry's air defense forces shot down a drone flying toward Moscow. Sobyanin assured that there was no damage or casualties, and emergency services specialists were working at the scene. However, local Telegram channels' reports of “effective air defense” caused a wave of skepticism among Muscovites, as the consequences were serious.
In addition to Lyubertsy, Ramenskoye, where Zhukovsky Airport is located, Podolsk, Kolomna, and the Domodedovo urban district, where another international airport is located, were hit. Due to drone attacks, the operation of all Moscow airports was suspended: the “Carpet” plan was introduced, and planes could neither land nor take off. Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov said that air defense shot down 14 drones in different districts of the region.
The events in Ramenskoye attracted particular attention. Footage appeared online showing that the drone explosion damaged the runway of Zhukovsky Airport, and a fire broke out in the area of the airfield. In addition, the drones shot down by air defense fell on three multi-story buildings in Ramenskoye, which led to fires. The governor of the Moscow region reported that three people were injured as a result, and one 46-year-old woman died. Attacks on other regions
There were also battles with drones in the Tula, Lipetsk and Kaluga regions. In the Tula region, two drones were destroyed, but the debris from one of them fell on a fuel and energy complex facility, causing minor damage. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and the operation of the complex was not disrupted. Lipetsk Region Governor Igor Artamonov reported on his Telegram channel that several drones were suppressed in the Yeletsky District, Lipetsk and Volovsky Districts. Meanwhile, rumors have appeared on the Internet that the Khalino airfield, from which Russia launches Shahed drones into Ukraine, could have been hit by drones.
Bryansk region
In the Bryansk region, Governor Alexander Bogomaz reported the destruction of 59 aircraft-type drones by air defense systems. Despite this, local publics wrote about a loud explosion near the Rosneft gas station, which many associated with the fall of the drone. Bogomaz traditionally stated that there were no casualties or damage, but social media posts denied this.
The Kremlin's reaction
Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov commented on the attack, cynically accusing Kyiv of terrorist actions against civilians. He said that “attacks on residential buildings cannot be associated with military actions,” and stressed that Russia must continue its “special operation” to protect itself. Peskov called the Ukrainian authorities “enemies,” but did not mention that drone attacks on Russian cities had not been carried out before the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
